Howard Ganz attended the Cleveland Institute of Art,
received a bachelor's degree at Kent State University and a master's degree in art history from
Case Western University.
In California he taught art at Orange Coast College and later at MiraCosta
College (Art Department Chair 1976-79, 1989-91). Though trained as a painter, he became interested in sculpture, learned to weld, cast bronze and did architectural commissions in the late
sixties.
In the early seventies, he self published a book titled "Organic
Design" which explained and illustrated his ideas about the processes of design in
nature. At that time he was inspired by the work of Antonio Gaudi, Frank Lloyd Wright and Paulo Solari.
In the eighties Ganz wrote computer programs enabling computers to draw organic forms. Articles were published about his work in local and
national media, and Apple Computer published "Artist Designer" one of his
early programs . His computer generated paintings of this period were shown at
MiraCosta College, The University of Arizona, Northrop University, Southwestern College and the Long Beach Museum of Art.
Ganz retired from MiraCosta College in 1993 and returned to painting
as his sole medium. He works with oils and acrylics, but currently paints with
digital media in a neo-expressionist style.
Ganz's current paintings have been exhibited in local and national shows, and he has won many awards. He is a member of the Digital Art Guild,
The Artist's Guild of the San Diego Museum of Art, The San Diego Art
Institute, The Escondido Arts Partnership, and the Carlsbad Oceanside Art
League. His website is www.ganzartwork.com.
