Self-Titled Book Statement
Ellie
Brown is a native of Boston, MA where she attended Massachusetts College
of Art. She received her B.F.A. in photography in 1997 and her M.F.A. in
Photography from San Jose State University in 2002.
Currently she is a full-time lecturer in photography and 2D foundations
at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.
Ellie
has received numerous awards including: a Leeway Foundation grant, first
prize from the Fraser Gallery's International photo competition in
Bethesda, MD, a featured artist from Women in Photography International,
an artist in residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna
Beach, FL with acclaimed photographer Graciela Iturbide and a full
fellowship residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute in 2006.
Both her
bookwork and photographs are exhibited extensively nationally including
two recent solo exhibitions in 2005 at the Morris Graves Museum of Art
in Eureka, CA and the Southern Light Gallery in Amarillo, TX. She is in
a book exhibition at the Philadelphia Free Public Library entitled
Bound/ Unbound through the summer 2006. Ellie has been
photographing girls’ issues since 1996 and making altered bookwork since
2002.
She has
taught photography at San Jose State University, National Hispanic
University, Ithaca College, Kutztown University and the College of New
Jersey. In addition to college teaching, Ellie has been teaching
children art since 2000 at a number of schools, museums and art
centers.
