Journeys and Destinations:
We are in a changing world of gravities and non-gravities, of form and
the formless, of non perspectives, and I think that all this flux and
foment should be reflected in the art of our times.
Building on an interest in astronomy and outer space exploration, my
work focuses on the abstract development of cosmic phenomena and
galactic occurrences. Also Chumash rock paintings and prehistoric art
provide strong stimulus for my creative imageries. Many of my works are
mixed media wall sculptures that incorporate broken shards and objects
from nature (such as eucalyptus branches, redwood, and sisal), to
express my beliefs about a greater universal whole that encompasses man
and nature. My ideas and abstract expressions are as current as the
latest space probe to Mars or scientific string theory speculation, and
as ancient as the flower-strewn cave burials of Neanderthal man. Several
of my wall sculptures and paintings have been exhibited with other
American artists in US Embassies in Riga, Latvia and Panama through the
US State Department.
For the last half
century, our civilization has embarked upon a Journey into outer space
and beyond. That destination as New World explorers has shaped our
perception of time and space, and we are now immersed in a world imbued
with intellectual visualizations of intensive scientific exploration and
technological invention. Our perception of these spatial worlds is
wholly influenced by preoccupations with cyber space and interplanetary
travel and intergalactic explorations, as well as the study of quantum
physics. My abstract sculpture and aesthetic searchings have been
engaged in this same journey of exploration, and I have attempted to
comprehend and visualize these same concentrations of all things spatial
and cosmic. The ancient Greeks and prehistoric Indian cultures also
devoted enormous creative and spiritual energies to the psychic
investigations and visualization of these same universal and cosmic
phenomena, and I am constantly influenced by their deep understanding
and drawn by the manifestations of the wonderful knowledge of their
universes.
