Artist Statement
I believe that painting has the ability to
capture a lot more of the world than its' appearance. I view each image
that I create, whether portrait, landscape or stillife as a narrative,
and I strive to capture the story hidden inside each situation. I want
every painting to grasp and illuminate the moment that tells its' visual
story in the best possible way. My paintings are a balance between the
imaginary and the meticulously observed. They reference the wide range
of interests that I draw upon, from art history to literature to the
natural sciences. My most recent body of work was inspired by 17th
century Dutch curio cabinet painters, whose perdella imagery broke up
the space of the painting, as if to tell the story within each one from
multiple perspectives. My goal is to combine the traditional painting
techniques that I have studied in depth with 21st century, personal
subject matter. I want my paintings to be part of a greater dialogue of
art, both historical and contemporary.
