Sharla Mann
BFA
<<
>>
Sharla grew up in
the hot hell of the prairies, constantly moving to and from
various renovated landscapes across Saskatewan and Alberta. This
constant relocation to new developments has shaped her as an artist and
her consumption of suburban theory. An emerging artist, Sharla Mann
lives and works in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia. Sharla holds a
BFA in Photography from the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design, and
has also studied photographically at the Edinburgh College of Art &
Design. Her sculptural and silent images speak conceptually about the
theories of home, the evolution of suburban landscape, and the identity
of our time.
Artist’s statement: My
photographic beginnings started only 6 years ago when I was handed my
first camera in art school. It allowed me as an artist to
photographically support the theories that I had been consuming
academically. My images have come to silently investigate theories
surrounding the ideologies of home and the evolutionary state
of the suburban lifestyle. The motivation behind my photographic work
stems from the
constant relocation of my nomadic suburban family to various "new and
upcoming"
landscapes. The images themselves also provide a dual reading. They are
in of
themselves portraits of the represented individual or community. By
focusing in on
space and chosen objects, we can gain a greater understanding not only
of
personality, but also of culture, history, gender, and current socio
economics.
