Illuminations explores the mystery of religious symbolism depicted in the visual art of diverse cultures, regions and epochs. The images share references to gestures, flowers, stars and, above all, the significance of light. In this context, Toronto artist David Cheung's contemporary electronic animation resonates with historical paintings and modern prints from McMaster's collection, as well as with ceremonial art objects on loan from members of the community, connecting but a few spiritual traditions. It seems natural that we celebrate light, warmth and new life at a time when sunlight is scarce and the earth is frozen. Similarly, we share a belief in divine intervention at those times when it would seem humanity's only chance for survival is a miracle; a white flower, candlelight, an oil lamp or a star all lead us away from occupation and persecution. Since ancient times the path to inner peace has been illuminated by our connection with heavenly bodies or their holy emissaries: angels, spirits, saints or tricksters. Folk art, devotional objects, high art or contemporary, the illuminations of mythology convey meaning and allow people to gather in communion - within public squares, houses of community worship, family homes and art museums - around symbols of the divine.
