Max Liboiron is a mixed
media artist who works with ideas of nature and what and who gets to count
as part of the discourse of "the natural". She uses dioramas,
pinhole photographs, multimedia installations, digital photography and
printmaking to emphasis nature as a mixture of animals, humans,
technology, culture, narratives, and the interactions between them;
"natural" and "artificial" categories are no longer
useful in these interactions. Her photographs emphasis the hybridity of
nature and culture, human and animal, fact and fiction, Utopian garden
landscapes and genetically modified creatures.
Max grew up on a self-sustaining farm in Alberta, Canada where she worked
with animals and plant life. Her understanding of sustainable personal and
environmental relationships was formed early both in the context of rural
living and her unique family make-up, and has been influential in both her
early studies of biology and her more topical inquiries in art and visual
culture during her MFA at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Max is currently living in New York.
