Artist Statement
Subject. The focus of most of my work is developed from being a woman. I
have had a long struggle with the idea of being a woman. Growing up my
parents identified me as the son they never had, thus oftentimes
referring to me as little John. I had the idea that I was one of the
guys and there wasnt anything I could not do?.UNTIL, I entered the real
world as a registered nurse, a traditional womans job encompassed by all
of the stigmas that went along with it. My art reflected many of those
difficulties, including a series on bathrooms and the backlash I
received from growing up boy. I painted with charisma, deciding to share
with other women my experiences.
The fight. I was informed over the years. Art was another world that was
not filled with woman in the forefront, but it was a way to make change.
I have embraced being a woman, a mother, and an artist. I believe, as a
woman, art is one of the greatest teachers for those willing to look,
listen and feel. I believe, as woman, we need to represent and empower
ourselves and the generations to come.
