Sarah Richards was
born in North London in 1978, the last of 6 children
in a Jamaican British family. She moved to New York in 2001, where her
creative senses are constantly stimulated.
A self-taught film photographer, her work has been shown in galleries
and spaces in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Australia.
Artist’s statement:
In a world glutted with imagery, what makes a picture stand out above
the rest? To me a picture is a visual representation of a memory and
thus a story. A truly effective picture is one that each and every
viewer is able to personalise and form even a small emotional
connection with. It invokes a nostalgic memory, a forgotten emotion, a
recurring dream. Such a picture forces the viewer to stop and think
deeply rather than to take the image at face value. Time to think? A
luxury commodity in this ever-speeding fast paced world in which we
live.
It is the responsibility of the artist to speak to viewers on a level
that reaches far beyond the confines of any written language in order
to add another dimension and layer to life. A picture is ‘written’ in
every language yet none at all, ‘speaks’ to everyone but utterssomething different each time. Few things in life have such ability.
The opportunity to capture such a special moment is a privilege that is
very seldom achieved yet constantly strived for.
I am driven to create something that is felt rather than merely seen
without isolating a viewer. Something that speaks without talking. Then
and only then will one have created lasting art.
